Jerald terHorst was a political reporter for the and served as President Ford's first press secretary, before resigning in protest of the pardon of Richard Nixon. He also wrote a biography Gerald Ford and a history of Air Force One. Jerald F. terHorst was born on July 11, 1922 in Grand Rapids, MI. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan in 1947. After serving in the Marine Corps during World War II, he worked as a reporter for the Grand Rapids Press and the Detroit News . He started as a local political reporter covering Gerald Ford in Grand Rapids, but was eventually promoted to Washington Bureau Chief for the Detroit News in 1961.
